The Folded Roof

Welcome to the Folded Roof, an exemplary mid-century/contemporary masterpiece built in 1956 and redesigned by architect M.O. Daby in 2007. Pacific Northwest treehouse meets Japanese Zen and Scandinavian hygge, the home is inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and the modern design ethos of blending the interior with its environment.
Approach the torii gate and find yourself in the tranquil rain garden. Enter the elegant front door where stunning views greet you through the angled wood and glass wall of windows. Marvel at the origami-inspired angled vaulted ceiling. All woodwork is handmade from captivating Doug fir. The radiant heated wood floors are made of American cherry. The open concept kitchen has quartz counters, custom birch cabinets, stainless steel appliances and walk-in pantry. The dining room opens to an outdoor deck under a canopy of trees. The primary suite has a travertine-tiled bathroom with oversized soaking tub, rain shower with stone floor and private deck with hot tub hookup. Also included is a spa-inspired full bathroom and second bedroom with garden views.
The thoughtful layout offers a simple division of spaces, the main level is the quiet zone and the lower level is the fun zone. Make your way down the artfully handcrafted cantilever staircase into the daylight basement with custom built-in shelves for records, books and objects. There are stylish concrete floors and a slate wall with wood-burning stove to warm the cozy space, complete with a bespoke media center. There is also a large laundry/utility room, a third full bathroom and two more bedrooms.
A magical yard features an enchanting stone wall and stairway, garden beds, fire pit, secluded bamboo grove with meditation bench, native and exotic trees (redwoods, Doug fir, golden maple, Japanese maples, magnolia, fig, apple, persimmon) and endless trails and spaces to enjoy with friends and family. Plus, year-round views of Mt. Hood, 50-year metal roof, converted art studio, and woodshop.

The architect designed this house two have two distinct zones: The main level is the “adult zone” and the lower level is the “kid zone”.  Locating the master bedroom suite, office, and living room on the main level allows adult privacy when desired, while the lower level contains two additional kid’s bedrooms and a recreation room.  The office is located with close proximity to the master bedroom to be used as a nursery while the kids are young.

"We love this home year round. In the winter we cozy up by the fireplace with a book. In the spring we love to see the tree canopy leaf out right outside our windows. In the summer we relax in the hammock and hang out by the fire pit. And in the fall the colors outside are just mesmerizing."
